Wimbledon is the most famous tennis tournament in the World. It is one of the four Grand Slams of the tennis season along with the US Open, French Open and Australian Open, however, as the oldest and the only one still played on grass it is the most prestigious of the four and always attracts the attention of the World’s sporting press when it takes place during the last week of June and first week of July each year.
Down the years, the biggest names to have ever played tennis have graced the famous Wimbledon Courts at the All England Lawn Tennis Club most of whom have won the Championship on mutlitple occasions. The roll of famous Wimbledon mens winners include five times winners Bjorn Borg and Roger Federer, three times winners Boris Becker and John McEnroe and record Gentlemans singles title holder, Pete Sampras with seven championships to his name.
Famous winners of the Wimbledon Ladies championship include record holder for most wins, Martin Navratilova with nine titles, Steffi Graf who won six titles during the 80s and 90s and in recent years the Williams sisters have domianted with seven titles from the past nine years, with Venus securing five of those.
The popularity of Wimbledon continues to grow year on year with TV audiences, attendances at the All England Tennis Club and Wimbledon betting getting increasing annually. Tennis is a sport with global appeal and whislt it remains as such the Championships at Wimbledon will not only remain a national institution amongst Britons, but will also be one of the World’s best know sportign events.
